The Lasell Rugby team suffered a 32-7 loss to Westfield State University this past Sunday on Grellier Field. The loss brought the Lasers’ season record to 2-2, as the Owls improve to 4-0.
Westfield got on the board early with a try within the first seven minutes. A failed conversion kick left the score at 5-0. With 15 minutes remaining in the half, the Owls scored their second try. Another failed conversion kicked left Westfield leading 10-0 going into the half.
The Lasers came out strong scoring early in the second half. A long drive including some productive ball movement and powerful running resulted in a try from junior Ricky Hawkes. Junior Joe Gately was successful on the conversion kick to cut the lead down to three.
After the Lasell score, the game opened into a free flowing attacking game. Westfield widened its lead, scoring two consecutive tries in an eight-minute span. The Owls made one of the conversion kicks, bringing the score to 22-7.
The match remained physical up to the final whistle. Senior Seth Parmeter came up with two consecutive huge tackles to slow down the Owls onslaught but efforts wouldn’t be enough, as Westfield scored twice more.
The Owls were 1-for-5 on conversion kicks.
Lasell looks to get back on track next Sunday at Mitchell College at 1 p.m.
