J. Cole: 2014 Forest Hills Drive
Hip-Hop lyricist, J. Cole announced the release of his third album through a Facebook post November 16. Cole’s latest project, 2014 Forrest Hills Drive, features songs that depict the story about his return home.
“What up? My new album is finished. It’s called 2014 Forest Hills Drive and it’s very special to me. It’s available everywhere on December 9. This time I’m releasing no singles, just the album. See you in three weeks. Thank you for the love and support,” Cole wrote.
2014 Forrest Hills Drive is named after Cole’s childhood address. The Facebook post was shared with a seven-minute video, where Cole took viewers on a tour of memorable places in his old neighborhood including footage regarding the making of the album.
While Cole hasn’t been releasing singles to promote the album, he has been traveling across the country, playing the album for fans in private locations. Cole has been trying to keep 2014 Forrest Hills Drive very private until it hits stores December 9, but the album leaked on December 3. Cole released a track list that shows no featured artists on the album. Most of the songs on the track list are between two and four minutes long, but the last song on the album, “Note to Self ” is a running 14 minutes.
With his last studio album, Born Sinner, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 in July 2013, 2014 Forrest Hills Drive, will be an album that won’t disappoint.
Nicki Minaj: The Pinkprint
Nicki Minaj’s third studio album, The Pinkprint, is scheduled for release on December 15. Straying away from her previous work with dance and pop sounds from Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Minaj went back to her traditional hip-hop roots, similar to songs from a reissued version of Roman Reloaded, subtitled The Re-Up.
In an April interview with MTV News, Minaj said, “The tracks on [my next album] are back to my hip-hop roots. And I don’t think it’s something that I’m necessarily trying to do. As soon as I started working on my new album, that’s just the songs that I’ve been writing.”
The Pinkprint has been supported with singles like “Pills n Potions,” “Bed of Lies,” and “Anaconda,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has become one of Minaj’s highest-charting singles. The album features artists such as Ariana Grande, Meek Mill, Skylar Grey, Jeremih, Lunch-money Lewis, and big name artists like Beyoncé, Drake, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown.
Along with going back to her original sound, Minaj rewinded to her original style from her early mix tape days. In a May interview with Hot 97, Minaj said, “I always wanted to go back to my mix tape look… The stripped down look matches the music.”
The Pinkprint has been a long waited album for Minaj and fans. With the album conveniently being released this holiday season, it makes for a popular gift.
