The Lasers (12-9 overall) took on the undefeated Bluejays of Saint Joseph Connecticut at home during last night’s men’s basketball matchup for an in-conference game at 7:30 p.m. The Bluejays, ranked sixth nationally in Division III, took the win over Lasell 91-64, improving to 20-0.

Senior guard Jaecee Martin kicked off the game for the Bluejays shortly into the first half with a jump shot earning the visitors two points.

Martin followed up with a layup putting two more points on the board for the Bluejays. The Lasers answered with jump shots from senior forward Almando Marinez and junior guard Demerick Warren.

As the game continued back and forth, the Bluejays earned a 9-point lead over the Lasers. This was answered by senior guard Ej Day scoring two threes, and another three by fifth-year forward Kevin Vanderhorst.

The pair of 1,000 point scorers had tightened the deficit to only two points with under 10 minutes left in the first half. However, by the end of the first half the Bluejays had a 53-37 lead over the Lasers.

The Bluejay’s senior guard Tyree Mitchell started off the second half of the game with two back-to-back free throws, putting the team at a 55-37 lead. Day followed, making a 3-point jump shot to tighten the game for the Lasers for a 55-40-point game.

However, that is the closest the Lasers got to closing the gap in the second half. The Bluejays went on to put the game out of reach, winning by a final margin of 27 points.

Game leaders included Saint Joseph’s junior wing Jalen Samuels with 17 points off the bench, and senior guard Jaecee Martin with 10 rebounds and 3 assists.

Lasell’s game leaders included Day with 24 points, Vanderhorst with 9 rebounds, and two assists from several players including Day, first-year guard Karim Belhouchet, Vanderhorst, Marinez, and senior guard Kevin Nunez.

Overall, the Bluejays team ended with 39 rebounds, 10 assists, and 14 turnovers while the Lasers had 29 rebounds, 11 assists, and 11 turnovers.

The Laser’s will next take on Anna Maria (12-9 overall) for an even matchup at home on Saturday, Feb. 12 at noon for senior day. Lasell will then finish the season with two road games at Regis and Saint Joseph’s (Maine).
