On Thursday night, the men’s volleyball team defeated Endicott in four sets at the Athletic Center.

Junior Brenden Joyce played a critical role for the Lasers both on and off the box score. Joyce tallied seven kills along with two service aces and a total of 11.5 points. Joyce, along with fellow junior Jan Baranowski and first-year Jordan Shinaut combined for 35.5 of the team’s 49 points.

“We’re seeing how far we’ve progressed and seeing how things click,” said Joyce. “How everything is coming together for us is really awesome to see.”

The men’s volleyball team started strong in the first set. They took a commanding five-point lead which they quickly gave up, leaving the game tied at 12. Endicott took a brief lead before the Lasers pulled away, taking the first set 21-18.

“We love to play in front of our home crowd, and I thought the energy overall tonight was great,” said coach Jeff Vautrin. “That definitely helped us out in the first set. We came out really hot, and I think we took them by surprise.”

The second set started much like the first, a four-point lead favoring the Lasers. Endicott made a run that made the deficit smaller, but the Lasers did enough throughout the set to maintain a lead despite a small margin of error. As a result, the Lasers take set two 25-22 and a commanding lead of the match.

With their backs against the wall, Endicott quickly pulled away to as much as an eight-point lead. The Lasers then stormed back to tie the set at 18. This, however, was as close as they got, falling in set three 25-20.

“I think set three, we kind of took our foot off the gas,” said Vautrin. “It’s just a mindset thing and how you grow as a team.”

The fourth set saw more from the Lasers than the last. Their early lead quickly ballooned to that of ten points or more. They finished the set and the match with a 25-13 win.

The Lasers advance to 4-5 on the season. Their next match will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Emerson College. Their next home match will be played at 7 p.m. Thursday against Regis.
