Tiny Desk makes a big comeback

The Tiny Desk Concerts are coming back to the spring Symposium. The Tiny Desk is based on National Public Radio’s (NPR) Tiny Desk, which features musicians performing for audiences in a small room. Lasell’s Tiny Desk will be online again this year with on-campus musicians performing using NPR’s Tiny Desk Zoom background.

Director of Lasell Works Stephanie Williams proposed the idea of the Tiny Desk Concerts at a meeting with the symposium committee last spring. “This just happened to be an idea that I threw out there and we ran with it. With the committee’s support, everything about Symposium is about the sharing of ideas.”

Williams says the Tiny Desk allowed students to have a creative outlet during COVID-19.

“Because of COVID we had to do things differently and I realized that NPR had a zoom background…I thought that was great because people could put that in their zoom background and perform and it would be a nod to the original Tiny Desk series and also to this strange time that we were in.”

Students can submit videos of them performing using the Tiny Desk background to participate in the Tiny Desk Concerts. Participants also have the option of using LCTV’s studio to film.

“I love the fact that there are people all over campus who have songs they’ve written and like amazing voices. This is like a chance for us to actually hear that, you know, other than listening to them, you know, singing in the shower,” said Williams. “This is an opportunity for the whole school to celebrate talent.”
