Students traveled on four different Shoulder-to-Shoulder service-learning trips over winter break, to Antigua, Ecuador, Mexico, and Vietnam. Each of the trips was designed to fit a specific learning theme and was preceded by a one credit course prior to the trip to help students prepare and learn about the various countries they would visit. Jill Carey, Associate Professor of Fashion and curator of the Lasell Fashion Collection, recently traveled to Hanoi, Vietnam to acquire more than 40 pieces of “both vintage and current ethnic dress” from local Vietnamese culture. A collection of photos from the 2014 Shoulder-to-Shoulder service learning trip to Ecuador. 13 Lasell students went on the trip with Professors Aaron Toffler and Jose Guzman as well as Gillian Stanley, who works in the Graduate Program. The group stayed at two haciendas, Pachamama and El Sinche with a group of hosts. While on the trip, the group learned about farming and nature, hiked mountains and volcanoes, visited cities and a university, and spent two days at a school where they interacted with children, fixed the water system, installed playground equipment, and created a soccer field. Applications for next year’s trip are available now and can be picked up at the Center for Community-Based Learning, located in Klingbeil House.

Last May, the Shoulder-to-Shoulder program made its first trip to the African nation of Uganda. The two-week international service-learning trip took place in the rural village of Bumwalukani, as 12 students worked with groups of seventh graders in preparation for the children’s high school entrance exams. The Lasell students prepared about 20 lesson plans for the Ugandan students. Director of the Center of Spiritual Life, Reverend Dr. Tom Sullivan, and Lena Berc, Director of International Services, led the service-learning trip.
